Seven Floor Plans with Dual Owner’s Suites

Gaining popularity throughout the Midwest, dual owner’s suites are the perfect answer to today’s multi-generational families. With separate, spacious bedrooms and large ensuite bathrooms, dual owner’s suites can be home to aging family members and the perfect guest bedroom or quiet space away from a snoring spouse.

Can we redesign one of our floor plans to accommodate dual owner’s suites? Absolutely! Below are seven homes we’ve recently designed. Check them out.

#1 The Carrollton

A photograph of the Carrollton with white siding, gray shingles and breezeway to garage. To complete this home’s design, we started with our standard Carrollton floor plan and redesigned it to meet the multi-generational needs of these homeowners. The primary owner’s suite was relocated upstairs, providing a private oasis away from the main living space. The in-law suite – with a separate kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom – was added off the mudroom with a private entrance from the breezeway and access to the rear deck.

#2  The Charlotte

The Charlotte Rendering with gray horizontal siding on home and white board and batten on garage. This beauty gives an entire wing of the home to the in-law suite. With a separate entry, one-car garage, large bedroom/living area, spacious ensuite, and walk-in closet, this home truly has it all! Additionally, with the second owner’s suite on the opposite side of the home, everyone has the necessary privacy and space they need.

#3  The Belmont

Our Belmont floor plan was the perfect design for these homeowners to build their first owner’s suite just behind the garage. They added a walk-in closet and full bath to complete the space. The second owner’s suite, featuring a large ensuite and walk-in closet, can be found upstairs, along with two additional bedrooms.

#4 The Madison II
The rendering of the Madison II with white siding on home and red board and batten on garage.

To accommodate two owners’ suites in the Madison II, we combined the kitchen/dining areas, added a 4′ bump to the kitchen/family room, and redesigned the mud hall/half bath/laundry areas. By adding a one-car garage, bedroom, walk-in closet, bathroom, laundry area, kitchen, dining, and family room, we created a 100% private oasis for this in-law suite. Additionally, we added a covered rear porch that allows access from both the main house and the second owner’s suite. View a PDF of the Madison II floor plan featuring two owner’s suites.

#5 The Fairmont
The rendering of the fairmont - a salt box inspired house.

The Fairmont features an owner’s suite on the main level and another owner’s suite plus two additional bedrooms on the second floor. Each owner’s suite is identically sized, with a large bathroom and a walk-in closet. A centrally located family room, kitchen, and side-load garage with easy access to the mudroom and laundry room are standard in this floor plan. This saltbox-inspired floor plan can be redesigned with a farmhouse vibe, as seen in our recent blog post.

#6 Custom Home Design

The Chesterfield, a “retired” American Heritage Home plan, inspired this home’s redesign. To ensure we captured the homeowner’s vision, the in-law suite in this home features a private entrance, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, and a sitting room with access to the outdoor living area.

#7 The Glenbrooke
Rendering of the craftsman-style glenbrooke.

We created two options for the in-law suite in the Glenbrooke – one with a kitchenette and one without. The changes our design team made required no additional square footage. We redesigned the kitchen and laundry areas, moved the stairs, and added a half bath.   Then, we combined bedrooms 2 and 3 to create the in-law suite on the other side of the home. The redesign still allowed for an additional office or bedroom at the front of the home. View a PDF of the redesigned Glenbrooke floor plans that include an in-law suite.
