What Is a Hybrid Exterior Wall System?
Our Hybrid Exterior Wall System combines the strengths of expanded polystyrene (EPS) continuous exterior insulation and fiberglass batt cavity insulation to create a high-performance wall assembly.
The system starts with a 2×6 traditionally stick-framed structural wall, fully sheathed with OSB for strength and durability. On the exterior, the wall is wrapped with 2 inches of continuous EPS insulation panels, while the wall cavities are insulated with R-19 fiberglass batt insulation. A full house wrap and properly detailed flashings at every opening provide complete protection from wind and moisture.
This layered approach results in a wall system that is stronger, tighter, and far more energy efficient than standard construction methods.
How Continuous Exterior Insulation Improves Energy Efficiency
One of the biggest weaknesses of conventional exterior walls is thermal bridging. In typical construction, heat escapes through studs and other framing components, which have a much lower R-value than insulation materials. By placing continuous EPS insulation on the exterior of the wall, the R-29 Hybrid Exterior Wall System dramatically reduces thermal bridging.
