Barndominium Inspired Floor Plans

Becoming more and more popular is the phrase “barndominium.” As the name implies, barndominiums are equal parts barn and condo.  Barn + Condo = Barndominium or, as some people say, Barndo.  Typically, these homes are metal buildings built on a slab, with room for both living quarters and a shop or garage.

Barndominium homes have a rich history dating back to when people housed their livestock on the ground level of the barn and made their homes on the second floor.  However, the word barndominium wasn’t coined until a 1989 article in the New York Times featuring Connecticut developer Karl Nilsen.  At that time, Nilsen was working on a new subdivision with lots that could accommodate homes, stalls, barns, and trails.  See the article: At Barndominiums, Home Is Where the Horse Is.

If you’re considering building a barndominium, American Heritage Homes has a few barndominium inspired floor plans like the Carrollton and Walnut Creek.  With a strong barn-style influence, these two homes differ from the popular 2 story farmhouse plans. And unlike a typical barndo, our homes come complete with 2×6 construction, full basements, and much more!

Carrollton

The Carrollton’s three-bay lofted barndominium inspired style sets up a palette for large open spaces.  As the front façade suggests, this plan has an oversized family room that opens to a spacious kitchen and dining area.  The plan also includes a first-floor owner’s suite and two additional bedrooms on the second floor.  The kitchen features a large island, generous cabinetry, and a walk-in pantry. Finally, the plan is complete with a large laundry room and a separate mudroom with two entries for those extra-muddy days.

Walnut Creek

Three distinct rooflines play perfectly together in the Walnut Creek’s unique design.  The square awning windows on the second floor and the open cupola up top provide plenty of natural light!  A standing seam metal roof with supporting craftsman brackets frames the classic front door.  All of these elements enclose a popular open floor plan with two-story ceilings. In addition, the Walnut Creek includes a generous kitchen with a walk-in pantry, large laundry, mudroom, and a first floor owner’s suite with four additional bedrooms on the second floor.  There is plenty of space for everyone in this 2,700+ square foot design!
