Crafting a Custom Ranch Over a Historic Foundation

When the homeowners of this property first contacted us about their vision of removing a log home and building a large ranch on the existing walls of a historic foundation, we were thrilled to embark on this remarkable journey. This wasn’t just any foundation; it was part of the Willow Hill Winery in Johnstown, Ohio.

Established in 1981, Willow Hill Winery was the vision of Dave and Elaine Rechsteiner, who embarked on their dream by cultivating German and French hybrid grapes along with Native American varieties on their expansive 95-acre farm. Over the years, their dedication bore fruit—quite literally—and they began producing approximately 10,000 bottles of wine annually by 2005. Although the winery has since closed its doors, its legacy lives on through the stories and the land that hosted it.  (Photo credit: Columbus Library).

Set against breathtaking views and a large pond, the property is a true gem!  The homeowners envisioned a home that honored this legacy while embracing modern living. To achieve this, we conducted a thorough review of the existing structure to ensure the feasibility of the new build. Then, our skilled trade partners meticulously dismantled the log home down to the subfloor, preserving the basement to maintain the historical connection.

With the foundation prepared, we embarked on constructing a custom ranch-style home. Today, this new custom home integrates modern amenities with the charm of its historic roots. Highlights include an open floor plan, a spacious kitchen with state-of-the-art appliances, and expansive windows that frame the stunning landscape.

The project not only fulfilled the homeowners’ vision but also preserved a piece of local history, seamlessly blending the past and present.
